Communication Models

Here are some of the various ways to depict the communication process:

Model A:

Model B:

Model C:

The three models depicted above are variations of linear, transactive models of communication. Model A is an embellished version of the Sender-Receiver model with a noise component. Model B is Berlo’s classic S-M-C-R model. Model C is Dance’s classic spiraling model of communication.  The spiraling helix of Dance’s model suggests that communication has circularity, but that it sometimes moves forward with new ideas that are influenced by the current form and content of communication.

Model D:

Model E:

Model F:

Models D, E, and F are not traditionally considered communication models. If we, however, think of communication as a ritual, or non-transative process, then these models fit the definition and image of what the communication process might look like.  In models D and E mandala’s are depicted. Model F is a maze, or labyrinth. All of these models depict the non-linear nature of the communication process.
